On August 14, Haiti was hit with a 7.2 earthquake resulting in major devastation. Days later, tropical storm Grace hit the country exacerbating the situation. The Haitian people are in need of medical care, shelter, food, water, clothing, and other supplies, as well as the materials to rebuild.
Pope Francis talked about the Haitian situation in his weekly audience, “As I raise my prayers to the Lord for the victims, I address a word of encouragement to the survivors, desiring that the international community will take a shared interest in them. May the solidarity of all alleviate the consequences of the tragedy.”
In response to the needs of the Haitian people, Cardinal Gregory has authorized Archdiocese funds to assist with this recovery. Catholic Relief Services is onsite in Haiti and is already helping.
