The Catholic bishops of Maryland have released a new letter to mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote.
In "Celebrating 100 Years of Women's Suffrage," Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori, Washington Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory, Wilmington Bishop W. Francis Malooly, and Maryland's auxiliary bishops note that many people did not support women's right to vote and that many obstacles remain to "achieve full recognition of the dignity of women in our society." "The life of the Church in Maryland ... has been enriched by women of the greatest caliber, women who have left their mark not only on the Church, but on all aspects of civilization," they write.
